Is Web Design/development Still A Viable Career Option In The Us?

This entry was posted by on Saturday, 19 December, 2009

I’m interested in entering the field as a 30-something career changer. Out of all the IT jobs, this one is the one I’m most passionate about.
But I’ve already learned that passion doesn’t pay the bills; and web design/development doesn’t seem to be the most recession-proof gig.
Or is it?
A career change into web design/development would definitely pay more than the career I already have, but not if it’s being outsourced to someone who’ll do it for cheaper.
Thoughts?

Hate to say so, but it’s true. Tons of web design/development jobs get outsourced to India, and it falls under the “may have” category of services. It really isn’t all that recession-proof.
Just stick to something that can’t be outsourced!

I can’t speak about pure design (creative) jobs, but I can address development. Yes, a lot of jobs have been outsourced, but the job situation for developers is not as bad a some people thing. Even though jobs have gone away, the demand for software and web sites has also been and will continue to increase for quite some time. This, coupled with the fact that fewer people are going into software development in college means that the job outlook is going to be pretty good.
With that said, yes development is an easily outsourced job. If you get into you should also make yourself more attractive by also learning things like project management. Also if you are working in a corporate environment the more you know about how the business operates the more valuable you will be.
One other thing to keep in mind. If you get into this now you are going to be competing for jobs with people who have a lot of experience, so being that this is a new career for you, this may make things more difficult.

Well! Web design is evolving daily and by the time you finish your training, there will be a new trend.
I advise you instead to get general knowledge how web design works etc…, but operate as a project manager. This way, you can get any tipe of clients you want and provide all types of web design services.
